McGill Law client Billing FAQ

  • When we refer to "trust accounts," we are talking about special accounts where client funds, such as retainer fees and trust requests, are held separately from the firm's operating funds. This separation ensures that client funds are used only for their intended legal services and expenses. It's a critical component of our ethical and legal obligations to you, our client, providing an additional layer of security and confidence in the financial dealings between you and our firm. Unearned retainers are returned to you upon completion of your matter.

  • A retainer fee is a prepaid amount that clients pay upfront to secure McGill Law’s services. This fee is deposited into a trust account and is used to cover your legal fees as work is conducted on your matter. We conduct regular billing in which we show you the work done on your matter and the amount of your retainer that we are paying McGill Law on your behalf. We'll notify you when your retainer balance is running low and discuss the process for replenishing it, ensuring uninterrupted representation. You may request an accounting of your case or work in progress at any time.

  • Trust requests are made when we need to either replenish your retainer or cover specific expenses related to your case. These requests are essential for ensuring that we have the necessary funds on hand to pay for expenses directly tied to your case, such as filing fees or expert witness fees without delay. Trust requests help us manage the financial aspects of your case efficiently, keeping everything moving smoothly.

  • We strive for transparency at McGill Law. Invoices are issued on a monthly basis and provide a detailed account of the services rendered, the time spent on your case, and any out-of-pocket expenses incurred during the billing period. Each line item on the invoice is clearly described, making it easy for you to understand the work performed and the associated costs. Should you have any questions or require further clarification on any aspect of your invoice, we encourage you to reach out to us directly to Amanda@McGillLawyers.com.

  • Fees are typically charged on an hourly basis, covering a range of services including emails, phone calls, drafting and reviewing documents, court appearances, and trial preparation. For certain services, a flat fee may apply. We are committed to transparency in our billing practices, ensuring you are fully informed about how your investment is advancing your case.
