Each year on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate and recognize motherhood. The origins of Mother’s Day go way back to ancient times with the Greeks and Romans, celebrating their maternal figures and female goddesses.  

Mother's Day, a cherished American holiday, owes its origins to Anna Jarvis, who was deeply inspired by her own mother’s dedication. Anna aimed to establish a national holiday to honor the sacrifices that all mothers make for their children. Following her mother’s passing, she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 in West Virginia. Her relentless efforts led to President Woodrow Wilson officially recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday in 1914. 

Initially, Anna envisioned Mother’s Day as a personal, family-focused celebration, honoring mothers with heartfelt gestures rather than commercial gifts. However, as the florist, greeting card, and candy industries began to capitalize on the holiday, Anna became disillusioned with its commercialization. She believed that the true essence of the day was being exploited and diverging from its original purpose. Jarvis organized boycotts and threatened lawsuits against groups commercializing the holiday, advocating for a return to the genuine observance she had intended. 

The positive message in Anna Jarvis's story is her unwavering commitment to preserving the true spirit of Mother’s Day. This holiday is a time to honor all types of mothers in all their diverse roles – whether they are biological, adoptive, foster, stepmothers, or maternal figures who have made a significant impact in our lives. The most meaningful celebrations come from sincere expressions of love and appreciation, celebrating the unique and invaluable contributions of every mother. Let’s embrace the true essence of Mother’s Day by recognizing and honoring the diverse and beautiful ways mothers enrich our lives.
