The global pandemic that we are all still experiencing has presented and continues to present a new set of challenges for all of us. Some of us are dealing with reduction of income or loss of a job; some are assisting a sick family member; some are still reeling from the sudden halt to life as we knew it. Regardless of your specific additional challenges brought about by pandemic, know that you are not alone! These additional challenges have also brought additional conflict for many couples.
For some, this time is filled with a significant more down or quiet time. I have three active children and BC (before COVID), at least one of my someones had at least one something every night. Add to my children’s activity schedule my busy calendar with nonprofit boards, work, and a social life, we were constantly on the go. This summer as some sports and activities started to open back up, we made the decision not to enroll our kids into any sports and maintain the quiet a bit longer. This time has allowed us to be home more, play a little more tennis and pickleball, and a lot more golf. However, it has also allowed me a chance to think about whether or not the hustle and bustle of our BC lives was worth it. I’m not sure that our BC lives are what I’m inclined to fully replicate once things start to really return to the new normal.
If this time of less distractions has allowed you to reflect on your marriage and determine that your marriage is not a relationship that continues to work for you, make sure that you seek out support to help you transition to your new stage in life. As you look forward, use this time of reflection and quiet to think about what you want and hope for life after divorce. Having an end in sight will allow you to go through your divorce process with a sense of direction and hope.
