Self-Care During Divorce or Separation

Divorce and legal separation can be some of the most complex and stressful times you may experience. It changes your life completely.  Handling legal and financial matters, all while bearing the emotional stress of ending a long-term relationship is a lot for a person to take on. In the midst of these changes, it is easy to neglect taking care of yourself. Self-care and social support are critically important areas for individuals navigating these challenging situations.

During the divorce or separation process, you will be making a lot of difficult decisions. You will be confronted with questions and choices that not only affect your future, but the future of any children you and your former partner may have together.   In order to focus on these decisions fully, you must make yourself a priority.

Self-care is crucial because it can help you cope with the stress and challenges that are inherent with the divorce process. By taking care of yourself you can better manage your emotions, lessen any depression and anxiety, and maintain a sense of well-being. Self-care creates resilience, supports you in making clearer decisions, and can help you navigate the upcoming changes in your life more effectively.

Examples of self-care are seeking support from a friend, family or therapist, journaling, exercise, meditation, mindfulness, engaging in hobbies that you enjoy and discovering new interests. It may seem counter-productive, but allowing yourself to grieve is also paramount. This act of letting go will allow you to process the end of your relationship, begin the healing process, and move forward with your new life. It is essential to acknowledge and work through your emotions instead of suppressing them.

Not acknowledging your emotions can have negative consequences on your mental health and can lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical health issues. Unchecked stress can significantly weaken the immune system, increase the risk of heart disease, and contribute to high blood pressure. It may also disrupt sleeping patterns, lead to digestive and respiratory issues, and potential issues with your cardiovascular and endocrine systems. High levels of stress can also cause headaches, muscle tension and fatigue. Feeling overwhelmed by the process is natural and self-care during and after the divorce could determine whether someone merely survives or thrives in the next chapter of their lives.

Taking care of yourself during this time could look like taking a break from your normal routine and taking stock of your situation, or it could be showing yourself some grace and allowing yourself to be less productive than normal. Stepping back does not necessarily mean a lengthy getaway, it could just be a momentary escape from your current situation.
