Spring Cleaning

There is something so refreshing about resetting your space as the seasons change. During the winter season, I often feel like I’m just holding on for brighter, warmer days. As a result, my home and life become cluttered. Laundry baskets overflow, kid’s toys are everywhere, and my attention is scattered in a thousand different directions.

Unfortunately, clutter in our homes increases our stress levels. Studies show that you’re also more likely to continue adding to the mess in an already-cluttered home. Your belongings get misplaced, and your anxiety increases as you realize you’ll have to dig your way out. Instead of stressing about the mess, here are some tips to refresh your space and life this spring:

Make an action plan.

Start by creating a plan of attack. Whether decluttering your home, office, or mind, you cannot attack every corner at once. Trying to conquer multiple spaces at once can feel overwhelming and cause you to be unsuccessful. Start with one room at a time and then work from top to bottom.

Declutter.

One of my first thoughts when I attempt to declutter is, “Have I used this in the last six months?” If not, away it goes. Occasionally I do get caught up in the “what-ifs,” thinking I might use this item again soon, but I try to be very realistic about those possibilities. Am I only hanging on to this for some sentimental reason? If so, is it possible to get rid of the item and still hang on to those precious memories?

Unfortunately, clothes are another big culprit when it comes to clutter. One trick for your closet: Turn your hangers around at the beginning of the year so the hook is facing out. When you remove clothes to wear them, return them to your closet facing the normal direction when you rehang them. Any clothes that have not been rehung in the normal direction at the end of the year should go in a donation box.

Don’t forget about your air.

The quality of your air is so important. That being said, I often forget to change the air filters in my home. Over the winter, more and more dust can pile up, possibly impacting those seasonal colds. Set a reminder for yourself to change the air filters, especially as seasonal allergies start to kick in. You’ll thank yourself later.

Set a new tone for yourself.

As you approach spring cleaning, think about all the ways you are starting fresh. Make your space inviting, a retreat all your own. Throw in a few bright items to lighten up your space and use your space to reset after a long day.
